5 Ways To Have an Eco-Friendly Australia Day

Posted by Bamboo Village on 21st Jan 2015

Australia Day is upon us, and at Bamboo Village we’re really excited! Whatever you’re planning for the big weekend, ensure you’re thinking of the environment at the same time. With so many people off work and celebrating, it’s easy to generate a lot of waste and use products that aren’t so ‘green’ to our precious planet. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite tips to keep your Australia Day eco-friendly.

Invite via the web– Planning to get a few friends and family together at your house or a get together at the beach? Handwritten notes are great, but when you’re wanting to be eco-friendly, stick to paperless methods instead. Either make a phone call, send a text, or use a little bit of social media. Private Facebook events are a great way to invite a large group of people to one place and in one go, and also means you can add images and address information too. Ensure that anyone who doesn’t use social media gets a phone call instead; you don’t want them to miss out.

Check on the Sunscreen- Anything that's put on our bodies will eventually end up in the water, whether body lotion or sunscreen, and we know Australia Day is guaranteed to be pretty hot. Picking the right sunscreen is essential. Research recommends buying ones which contains safer ingredients such as zinc and titanium, and avoiding creams with the ingredient 'oxybenzone'. Our good friends over at Echolife have provided Bamboo Village with an exclusive coupon code for 20% off sunscreen, and their sunscreen is natural. Read more and get the code here.

Buy Local Food - Consider buying as much as you can from local sources for Australia Day if you're planning on holding a party, big feast or picnic. When you buy local you're supporting the local farmers which keeps their businesses thriving, it is usually cheaper for you, and creates local jobs at their farms too which supports the local economy. It also saves the travel to supermarkets, ensures less waste, and also means your food is fresh without preservatives; a really great bonus.

Walk, Cycle, Run - There'll be many cars on the road on Australia Day, but if your destination is within a short distance and it is practical, walk or bike there instead. If there's a lot of you or you have kids, plan to car share with friends or family to save taking several vehicles. If you decide to walk or exercise, you can know it is adding to your fitness in the process.

Bamboo Beach Towels - Headed to the beach? Grab a Bamboo Beach Towel! Ours measure an enormous 150cm x 180 cm and feature luxurious bamboo velour on one side and terry loops on the other. They have a really nifty hidden stash pocket that will keep your valuables out of sight and sand-free too. There are so many reasons to buy Bamboo towels instead of regular ones, but the main eco reason is that bamboo is a greener material that will simply return to the Earth. Read more here.
