This Week We Found… Bokashi One™ Composting

If you're a fan of composting, what do you do when it's raining outside, but you want to add leftover veg peel to the compost bin? Wouldn’t it be great if there was a compost solution for indoors? You might be as pleased as we are to hear about the Bokashi Composting System. It composts all kitchen waste without any odours or insects, and can be kept within your home, saving you the hassle of having to dash outdoors.

So how does it work? Food waste is layered with a special mix, in a special bucket. The combination of the air tight bucket and special micro-organisms in the mix enables the waste to ferment. The waste doesn't decompose in the bucket; the volume of it all reduces as the water content from the waste drains out at the bottom.

When the bucket is full, the waste can be transferred outside and buried beneath the soil to complete the whole process. The juice from the water can also be used in the garden and around the home; the good bacteria in it competes with the harmful bacteria in places like toilers and septic tanks, preventing algae build up.

What a genius idea! Not only does it create eco-friendly compost, it keeps your kitchen bin fresher for longer because food waste is store elsewhere. Traditional compost can also take up to a year to complete, but Bokashi is really fast and takes just a few weeks.

Less food waste heads to the landfills too which is fantastic, and no greenhouse gases are released either. When the compost eventually heads to your garden, it helps rebuild soil, and saves you money because you don't need to buy fertiliser! It adds great nutrients to your soil too; ideal if you grow your own produce.
