4 Really Meaningful New Year’s Resolutions

Posted by Bamboo Village on 24th Jan 2017

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions for 2017? Where as many will be long lost thoughts by the time February rolls around, many do stick and are really worthwhile. Alongside the ones for our own health and the wellbeing of the planet, there are some great resolutions you can make that are additionally meaningful. Not only do you help someone or something along the way, but you'll be left feeling proud too. We've put together some of our favourite ideas below. Why not give one a try in 2017?

Volunteer - An amazing meaningful resolution for this year is to volunteer. Many organisations need volunteers more than they do funds in many cases. Why don't you look for causes that you're passionate about in your local area? Whether it is looking after a community garden or offering two hours a week in your local charity shop, every little helps; imagine what would happen if everyone did the same?

Attend - Have you considered going to a council meeting about local causes in your area? You can shake your head at a letter that falls through the letterbox about city changes you disagree with, and hope that someone else raises their hand to share their thoughts - but why don't you join in? Head to a local meeting, talk with people, debate, argue, fight your corner. You could be discussing a really important issue that impacts something huge for where you live - and you would have made a difference!

Soul - Instead of just focusing on a few things you want to do for yourself as a resolution, why not resolve to do one simple act of kindness each week? This can be as small as offering to help an elderly person across the street, or helping your neighbour out with the school run. It doesn't even have to be something that you tell anyone about, but can make a big difference to someone. Check out the #AJO movement, which took off on Facebook and Twitter in 2013 in memory of Alyssa O'Neill, and has prompted strangers to start offering up random acts of kindness at cafes, and beyond.

Donate - Everyone has spare coins lying around the house; they could be in jars, a little tray by the door, or stuck in half a dozen drawers. Instead of letting them sit there, why not make an effort to collect them over a few months? When the jar is starting to look like there's more than a few dollars in there, use the money for a good cause. You could donate it to a local charity, or why not offer to take a friend or family member out for lunch?

Have you got any additional resolutions that are really meaningful? We’d love to hear what you’re doing in 2017!
