Bamboo Vs. Cotton – What’s better?

Posted by Bamboo Village on 26th Feb 2015

Bamboo comes with so many wonderful advantages as a material, and one of our favourite ones is its comparison next to cotton. When it has been tested in similarity with polyester and cotton, it comes through as stronger (perfect for longevity in your clothing and household linens), and has better moisture wicking and absorption properties (ideal for keeping cool!). Bamboo is also much softer than cotton, as well as being hypoallergenic and great for anyone who suffers from allergies.

Bedding and Towels

How will bamboo compare for cotton around the home? In your bed, our bedding settings are made from 100% bamboo fibre; far softer than any high thread count cotton sheets. On our towels, 100% bamboo pile on cotton backing creates a soft towel which is extremely durable and resistant to piling and shrinkage. Our bamboo towels are also made of fibres which are four times more absorbent than cotton towels.

Growth Rate And Sustainability

Did you know that bamboo grows really fast? When it has been harvested, it grows back within a year and often grows 120cm a day – that’s some fast growth! Bamboo is naturally pest resistant, which means it doesn’t need fertilisers to boost its growth. This is very different to cotton which needs to be replanted at every harvest, and also needs a lot of watering and spraying to grow as much as it needs to.

Eco Friendly

We love how environmentally friendly bamboo is; it needs no chemicals and very little water to grow. It also absorbs more carbon dioxide from the air, and releases more oxygen into the air which improves the quality of the air. To compare with cotton farming, this requires a lot of chemical spraying as well in extensive irrigation. A cotton T-shirt can use up to 2700 litres of water in the nurturing process! Bamboo is much more eco-friendly.
