Have An Eco-Friendly Valentine's Day

Posted by Bamboo Village on 1st Feb 2017

The most romantic day of the year is almost upon us; Valentine’s Day! Full of love, chocolates, meaningful cards, flowers and romance, it’s a day to cherish. As wonderful as the day may be however, celebrating it worldwide even for just one day a year can use up a large amount of the Earth’s resources through trees cut down for cards, as well as carbon emissions used to transport roses and flowers to your loved ones. Wouldn’t it be great if we could make the day more of a green affair? Check out these great ideas to wish Happy Valentine's not only to that special someone, but to Mother Earth too!

Make your own cards - Making your own card not only is more planet friendly, but adds an extra romantic touch! See what you have lying around the house that you can use; newspapers, magazine paper, stamps or stickers are all ideal for making your own card. Have a craft afternoon; stick on some music and create a homemade romantic work of art to present to your other half. Another alternative is to send your card online, saving paper completely.

Bamboo Nightwear - Instead of buying last minute gifts at the local supermarket, give the gift of eco-friendly bamboo for your loved ones this Valentine's. Our Men’s Underwear comes in a range of colours for the man in your life, or check out our traditional style, loose fit, boxer shorts in buttery-soft bamboo. For the lady, our Niah Bamboo Night Dress will definitely be on high sleepwear rotation or our PJ Slouch Pants, pants she'll want to put on the minute she gets in from work, and wear the whole weekend through!

Eat in - Instead of driving to a restaurant in the city, make a special romantic meal at home instead. Use fresh seasonal local ingredients such as veg from the farmers market, and try making a new recipe that'll surprise your special someone with your great cookery skills, with a side dish of eco-friendliness. Dive in to the cookery books at home that rarely get looked at, or take a look at Pinterest for some inspiration.

Give locally grown flowers - It's always nice to spoil your loved ones with flowers, but why buy bouquets that have been transported thousands of miles to your florist’s windows? Choose a locally grown bouquet or a plant instead from a nearby farm, and know you’re doing that little bit for the planet. Many florists will have some beautiful flowers especially for the special day.

Dine by candlelight - Dim the lights on Friday night, and eat your food by candlelight (safely, of course)! It is obviously a little more romantic, and you're saving massively on energy for a few hours. Try to use natural or beeswax candles that are biodegradable for an extra eco touch.

Make your own gift - Just like the card, making your own gift is also a lovely touch. Some nice ideas for Valentines include homemade photo albums, jars of jam or cake mix (to make together this weekend!), or a homemade face mask, perfect for a relaxing treat. Take a look at Pinterest for some ideas.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle - For anything you buy or receive on Valentine's Day, ensure the packaging is recycled. Every year over 200 million cards from Valentine's Day are ending up in landfills countrywide; keep the planet alive, and ensure everything you can, ends up being recycled.
