4 Ways to Throw an Eco-Friendly Spring Picnic Party

Posted by Bamboo Village on 17th Sep 2013

Spring is upon us, which is a fantastic time to enjoy the changing of the seasons and some (hopefully!) glorious weather. A delightful way to enjoy the spring is with a picnic party; gather your nearest and dearest and head to your favourite park this coming weekend. As nice as they can be though, picnics and parties can generate a lot of waste, but that doesn't mean you have to miss out on the fun if you're environmentally friendly.

Why not throw an eco-friendly picnic?

No one will notice the difference, but you can relax in the knowledge that you're doing your bit for the environment while having a good time - bonus!

Go Paperless - While it is wonderful to receive a hand written note through the mail, if you're eco-conscious, take advantage of the 'paperless' methods. We're not talking a phone call (although that is fine too!), but a little social media. Set up a private Facebook event or send out an online 'postcard' to your chosen invitees, add some colourful images and event info, and hit the send button. Make sure not to miss out on anyone who doesn't use social networking; they might be the ones you have to call.

Local & Homemade – We’re talking about local farmers markets and even from your own garden. Use fresh herbs or tomatoes that you've planted, and shop for foods that are fully in season at your local market. Instead of bulk buying packaged meals and drinks, why not make your own? Picnic food is so easy to make if you have the time - pasta dishes, potato salad, and homemade crisps are just a few examples. Make your own pizza and sprinkle on home grown basil too.

The Crockery, Cutlery & Waste – If you use plastic cutlery and paper plates, ensure that everything is recycled properly afterwards; this saves both the environment, and you having to do the washing-up. Alternatively use reusable plates, knives and forks and give them a good wash-up with our biodegradable and sustainably-made bamboo 'Be Good' dish brush. If there is any food left over (and you don't plan on eating it later), ask guests to package it up in a bag and use it on your own compost pile.

Stay Local and Use Eco-Friendly Furniture – Who says you need to go to a park? Why not throw a picnic in your own garden! Use fresh flowers and leaves for centrepieces on the tables, add some eco-friendly candles and a few garden lights, and you have the perfect private picnic. If you hold your picnic at home and love having guests over on a regular basis, why not invest in some eco-friendly garden furniture? Reputable places sell responsibly sourced garden benches and picnic tables, which can reduce your carbon footprint as well as looking pretty too. If you’d like to add a bit of extra style to your picnic, use fabric and paper decorations that are eco-friendly and can be easily recycled!
