If you're the owner of a pet as well as being eco-conscious, you might be concerned about the impact your pets could be having on the environment. Just like there are ways that we can be greener in our day to day activities, there are certain things you can do every day with your pet to reduce their carbon footprint on the planet, from the food they eat to disposing of their waste. Take a look at some of these great tips below.

Dispose of waste properly - Pets generate a lot of waste each year, and if it isn't disposed of properly, it can have a major effect on the eco system. A lot of dog waste for example, is picked up by plastic bags that are then thrown away and end up just sitting in landfills for years. Instead, ensure that you use one that is biodegradable as well as compostable. Look out for them in your local pet store, and always ask if you're unsure.

Buy Eco-friendly Beds - When you buy products for your pet, look for ones that are made out of sustainable and eco-friendly materials, that will not only look after the earth, but will last longer which saves you money too. Bamboo is a great green option. OurBambĂș Hammock's combination of clean lines, unique sleeping surface and rich eco-friendly materials make it Pet Lounge Studios most sought after design. It is designed with a beautiful, solid bamboo frame and a removable/reversible ultra-suede cushion which is inherently stain resistant and hypoallergenic.

Natural or Organic Food - When buying food for your pet, ensure that it is all natural, organic, locally produced, or instead make your own. When you buy food that is available on a large scale on the mass market, it can be made from poorer quality ingredients. Buying local, organic or similar means that the food won't contain chemicals or hormones that can be bad for both your pets and the environment. If you decide to cook your own, talk to your vet about the best options for your pets diet.

Recycled Materials - When buying toys for your pet, look for ones that are recycled, biodegradable, and compostable. This will ensure that they are environmentally friendly, and have been made with the environment in mind. Many that are made from recycled materials will create less waste, and last longer too, saving you money in the long run.

Treatments and Repellents - If your pet needs a treatment for such things as ticks and fleas, ensure that you buy non-toxic and pesticide free repellents. Other repellents can be harmful to both pets and the environment. If you're unsure about any new products that you're trying, consult your vet who will be able to take a look at what is in the product and advise you.
