6 Ways to Make your Car more Eco-Friendly

How you drive and maintain your car can really go a long way in reducing emissions and conserving the environment. Proper maintenance reduces the consumption of fuel as well as decreasing the amount of substances going into the air. Follow these steps below to become greener with your car, as well as saving you a few dollars too.

Change your driving style - How do you drive? A little bit of extra speed, a smooth cruiser? Bad driving habits can actually be costing you when you drive, as well as adding lots of awful emissions into the environment. When your car goes above 90kph, it loses its fuel economy. Driving at 90kph is said to save 25% on your fuel costs. So next time you head out in the car, be aware of what speed you're driving.

Invest in a GPS system - Everyone gets lost sometimes, and trying to find the street you're looking for can mean more time on the road that's unnecessary. Buying a GPS system will not only help you with directions to get you from A to Z, but will also find you the shortest route too, meaning less time on the road.

Reduce the weight - It takes more fuel to move a car heavier in weight, than one that is lighter. You can't actually reduce the weight of the car, but you can avoid adding unnecessary weight in the boot. It is very easy to ride around with things in the boot such as car seats or things you meant to recycle a few weeks back, and forget that they're there. In doing so, you're adding weight that is actually hurting the environment, so empty your boot.

Air conditioning usage - This is definitely needed if it really is hot outside, but if it is looking a little overcast, do you really need the air-conditioning? Open the windows instead which will save fuel and the environment (except at higher speeds, which can be dangerous).

Check the tyres - Having tyres with poor pressure can actually worsen your cars fuel efficiency. Ensure that your tyres are at optimum pressure (air is free, after all), and check them regularly. When they're not properly inflated, it makes it harder for the car to move which means more fuel is consumed. Having optimal tyre pressure decreases the risk of damage for your car too, not to mention fuel costs. Also ensure that the filters on your car are cleaned and changed regularly, which will improve your car’s efficiency.

Brake Aware - Did you know that accelerating and then braking aggressively (such as when in a traffic jam) can actually use up to 30% more fuel in your car? Try to be more aware of when you're doing so, and your car will become more economical.
