Going Green In Spring: Week Two, Kitchen Cleaning

Posted by Bamboo Village on 12th Oct 2015

Each week we're focusing on various different aspects of spring cleaning and including some great tips to ensure you're as green as possible whatever you do! This week we're looking at cleaning your kitchen, the eco friendly way.

Have you ever considered how 'eco' you're being when you clean the kitchen? It's easy to think that it isn't a room that can do much harm to the environment, but many kitchen based products can do a lot of damage and they're a lot of eco-friendly alternatives that are a lot less harmful. Check out these eco-friendly kitchen cleaning tips that will not only make your kitchen a whole lot greener, but your life a little easier!

Create your own cleaners - Making your own cleaning products at home is a fantastic way to stay eco-friendly. By using things like baking soda, vinegar, aromatic plant oils, lemons, olive oil and water, you can feel confident that any cleaning you're doing isn't hurting the environment and you can ditch the shop bought cleaners. It also works out cheaper - bonus!

Shop carefully - If you do buy shop bought cleaners for the kitchen, look for ones that are solvent free, biodegradable, and won't release any nasty chemicals into the air either. Traditional products contain a lot of ammonia and bleach, and while they're good at keeping your home clean, they can create problems for your eyes and airways, as well as polluting the environment. When they enter the water too, they can harm wildlife. Shop carefully, and do your bit for the environment.

Use Bamboo - Your kitchen will be massively eco-friendly when you use kitchen supplies made from bamboo. Bamboo is eco-friendly and self-sustaining, making it perfect for kitchen utensils. Our earth-friendly Bamboo Vegetable Brush is as functional as vegetable brushes can get. Its unique blend of natural and recycled bristles give it just the right amount of toughness needed to remove dirt from fruits and vegetables without bruising them. Bamboo handle provides comfortable placement for your thumb for more ease of use. You can’t get any more functional than that, can you? You actually can! “The Ring” also doubles as a nail brush and it makes for a great décor when stacked or hung on your counter.

Buy Eco-Balls - Washing the kitchen towels? Consider using Eco-Balls instead of washing power or liquid in your washing machine. They are completely chemical, perfume and additive free, and effortlessly remove grime, dirt and odour from clothes in the same way traditional cleaners do. They're also fantastic if you or your children suffer from sensitive skin. If you prefer to tumble dry, use dryer balls too. Looking for eco-friendly tea-towels? Try our Bamboo towels. They’re soft, absorbent, quick-drying, durable, antibacterial and are good for polishing glassware as the bamboo fibre is so absorbent it doesn't leave streaks.

Eco-friendly candles - No one likes a smelly kitchen, but instead of using household sprays, light a candle instead (keeping it away from children and flammable surfaces). Pure beeswax and vegetable oil-based candles are the healthiest ones for the environment, and will eliminate any bad smells from your home.
